Felt and Roses

We tried our hand at felting at our local home ed art group today. It was great, I have wanted to know how to do this for a long time and now I know! Here are the felts we made. The top one is Hermione's and the bottom one is mine.

After a long and rather frustrating maths session, (Hermione seems to have completely forgotten the art of subtraction), we decided we needed a bit of light relief. A brochure came in the post this morning from the essential oil company I usually order from. This got me thinking that perhaps we could make our own rose oil as I've always wanted some but never felt able to splash out that amount of money on an oil. After a quick Google I felt I had enough information to make a start and that's what we did.

First we picked a handful of rose petals.

We then filled a mortar with some olive oil and added the rose petals. We gave it a good pounding with the pestle and have left it to stand for twenty four hours.

Tomorrow afternoon we'll strain the oil and repeat the process with fresh petals - every day for a week. I'm not sure how it will turn out but nothing ventured nothing gained!

I use essential oils, the cost of Rose Otto is extortionate, best of luck. Keep us informed

reminds me of making 'perfume' with rose petals and water for my mum when I was a kid. She always refused to wear it - no idea why, lol!

I'm sure yours will be much better ;)

That looks brilliant, I'm amazed that Ryan seems to be picking up mathematical concepts up all on his own, I wasn't sure if I was brave enough to let him try.

Oh I remember that making perfume business as a kid. My mum and dad were keen gardeners and I really wanted to capture the smell of the garden at the end of the day - you know that really strong floral scent. I kept my petals and water in a tin with a lid in my room and forgot about it. I remember my mum finding it months later rusted and absolutely stinking to high heavens :-)

We changed the petals today and no nasty niffs as yet.
