Unplugged Project - stone

This weeks Unplugged Project was stone.

We decided to look at some rock formations and stalactites and stalagmites in particular.

We have set up our own experiment to make stalactites. I read about the experiment in a book, (not that offers any guarantees), so it *should* work but I'm not hopeful. The solutions hasn't even started to travel up the wool as yet for some reason.

We dissolved a few teaspoons full of sugar in two cups of warm water. We then weighted a piece of wool with a plastic bead on each end. We placed one end in each cup with the wool drooping between the cups. There's a saucer between to catch drips (assuming the thing starts to work). Apparently a stalactite will form on the wool.

Hmmm, watch this space.

Whiling away the time, waiting for rock formations to appear on our window cil *grin*.

I was just reading your posts and want to say I'm so sorry for the loss of your business. It must be heartbreaking...I am throwing a little energy and will your way, hoping that you can use some of it to get through your day.

And wouldn't it be nice if those darned crystals formed??? Jeez, how about just a small miracle???

Oh Great project. I remember reading about this project before, been meaning to do but I keep forgetting. Thanks for the reminder. It will be fun to do with earth science this year.

I was excited to do crystals with Jaylene recently, but I read that they won't form in humid places, so that leaves us out. I hope yours form quickly ;)

My daughter says we should have tried making our own rock formations like you did. Something we need to try!
