We were watching Coast earlier this week and a famous painting of the women of Cullercoats was featured.
It turned out to be a great example of symbolism in art and followed on nicely from the workshop we attended last week about the very same thing.
One night when there was a storm, the lifeboat was dragged three miles along the shore to a safer place to launch it so that it could go out to tend a stricken vessel. The lifeboat was in fact pulled by six horses and some women of Cullercoats but the artist omitted the horses, turning the women (who apparently were quite renowned) into a symbol of strength, courage and determination.
