To end a life?

One of our goldfishes has been ill for over a week. It lies on it's side at the top of the tank blowing bubbles. We've taken advice and have treated it accordingly. Apparently it's swim bladder may have 'gone' and the likelihood is it will not pull through.

I hate seeing it like this but can't quite bring myself to kill it. How do you kill a goldfish humanely?

Thanks for that Amanda. I've saved the link, it's very informative. Sadly (I think) I've come home this evening to find he's given up the fight. He's now at rest in the wheelie bin :(

Yes, it is a relief really. Miles has just there now noticed and has been spun the usual line of 'Oh, he must have gone back to the pet shop to visit friends - we'll go and collect him later'.

We've had quite a few fish go with this, it seems to be a common problem
